Pressure cooker size guide for Indian families

Quick answer

Capacity is more useful than a one-size-fits-all recommendation. Think about the quantity you cook most days, whether you batch-cook, and the room food needs to expand safely.

A practical size starting point

A 3 litre cooker often suits one or two people and smaller batches. A 5 litre cooker is a flexible choice for many families of three to five. A 7 litre cooker is useful for larger households, entertaining or batch cooking.

  • 3 litre: smaller portions, rice, dal and side dishes
  • 5 litre: flexible family meals and moderate batch cooking
  • 7 litre: larger households and bigger quantities

Allow room inside the cooker

Never choose capacity based only on the finished portion. Rice, pulses and foods that foam need safe headroom. Follow the fill limits and instructions supplied with the cooker.

  • Do not exceed the maker's maximum fill line
  • Use extra caution with foods that expand or foam
  • Choose the next size up if the cooker is regularly near full

Check the stove and handling

Confirm whether the base supports gas, induction or both. Larger cookers are heavier when full, so also consider who will lift, clean and store the cooker.

  • Check induction compatibility
  • Look at handle comfort and spare-part availability
  • Choose a size that fits your burner and storage space
